Letter from the Director
The need for Community Catholic Center arose when Community Catholic School was closed in 2003. Because it was the last Catholic school in Portland and the West End, Catholic education was not available to children living in these neighborhoods. A group of concerned people, many of whom had been involved with Community Catholic School, committed themselves to finding an alternative solution to the closing. They were aware that the educational alternatives available to families in this part of Louisville included some of the lowest performing schools in Kentucky.
These people formed Community Catholic Center with a vision of continuing the great heritage of Catholic education to help families escape the cycle of poverty. The Board of the new Community Catholic Center designed an innovative model of providing Catholic education. The Board committed to providing the financial and educational support to allow students to attend existent Catholic schools and to be successful in these new environments.
The beginnings were a struggle, but now CCC is growing in many ways. None of this would have been possible with out the many people who have contributed to this endeaver. Now, as word is spreading and the children of Community Catholic are experiencing success, we need the support and assistance of even more people.
We welcome you to our website to learn more about Community Catholic Center and why it is so important to the families who live in Portland and the West End. We invite you to join with us in helping to educate our students, to pray for our families, or to volunteer your time. Please contact us for further information. We would welcome the opportunity to sit down with you personally and explore how you can help us with this most important mission.
Sincerely,
Sister Barbara Bir
